FIRE MINISTRY

If you know someone who has lost their home, possessions, and life as they knew it in a fire here are some things you can do to help them:

Their first need is for prayer! Ask God to give them grace, provisions,  wisdom, guidance and comfort.

They need immiediate cash funds for at least one set of day clothes, and sleep wear.  A gift card to a local Kohls, Walmart, or Target would be great. Figure about $250.00 per person.

Provide a cooler with drinks, water bottles, pop, juice.  Let them keep the cooler. Top it with plenty of ice.

If you are a realtor, line up three to four rental homes for them to look at when they are ready. Find out their price range ahead of time and the numbers of bedrooms needed.  Consider the best location for them. Take care of setting up their contract...and don't charge them.

Do a gift card offering at your church for the family.  Ask everyone to bring a gift card to a restaurant, or department store.

Arrange meals for the family for the first three months.  Ask everyone to make the meals in disposable containers or in white/ clear pyrex ware that the family can keep to start their new kitchen with.

Do NOT call the family if it was a complete loss, instead send cards with your wishes and prayers.  Do not expect thank you notes or call backs from them.

If you see them, do not ask questions.  Let them tell you what they are going through or need.

Drop off goodies to their door:  such as books, blankets, towels, robes or food.

Once they are in their new rental place have four or five women purchase everything needed to start a pantry, deliver and set it up.

Develop an organizational package:  tape, glue, ruler, pens, folder, paper, markers, stapler, paperclips, calculator....put in a small briefcase for them.

Appoint one person as liason to the family and their local church.  Take them a Bible.

Send flowers or take them to the family as a nice way of saying you are thinking and praying for them!  Brighten their day!

If you are a I person, offer to help with their insurance claims for the first few months during post tramatic stress.  They need one person,
who is confidential, and unjudgemental, with a heart as good as gold.

Take them a first aid kit.

When they purchase or rebuild a new home, and it is ready... help them move in!  Celebrate!

Be patient with them.

Remember this is a process for them, it takes about 2 years to move through the entire process.  They need ongoing support.
